PAKISTANS RELATIONSHIP WITH THE GREAT BRITAIN AND COMMONWEALTH
In CommonWealth meeting in 1950 in colombo, the Colombo plan was setup to extend aid to Pakistan. It also provided one Million sterling pounds for sui Gas Project. Canada gave $40 Million for development of Railways, thus this made the relations better.
Although in 1954-1955 Pakistan and British agreed to work together as member of SEATO and CENTO,which were and communist ideologies to curtail the Russian Expansion, thus this made relations better between both countries.
However during the 1980's Britian remained a major trading partner of Pakistan an estimated 376 Million Sterling pounds worth trade between two countries by 1986. In the 1990's Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif continued to pay visits to Great Britan to strengthen mutual relations.
Although Pakistan has been an active participant of Common wealth Games. The Queen of England visited Pakistan on Aug 14,1997 to attend the Golden Jubilee ceremony of the Creation of Pakistan. She was accorded very warm welcome. Presence of a sizeable Pakistani population in England has also played an important role in improving the relations. Some of these pakistanis managed to get elected in British parliment thus this paved a way for better relation between both countries.
However, the Relations between two states witnessed failure too. Many Pakistani army officer were not happy with the British officers in their ranks and some of them unsuccessfully tried a military coup in 1951. Pakistani Government also had reservations about the Radcliffe award.
